Donabe Clay Pot Nabe 17cm #0504

Great earthenware pot for one or two servings
I've never owned or used a donabe before so I was a bit nervous about this purchase. The instruction manual is indeed in Chinese but who cares, that's what the internet is for. This particular donabe is glazed everywhere but the very bottom.

You must "season" your donabe prior to first use. I found some good instructions plus a video and recipes on www.kyotofoodie.com. All you need is rice and water, it's not complicated.
You must also ensure your donabe is completely dry on the bottom before heating because water inside its pores can expand and cause it to crack.
Never heat it empty. Other than that, it's super simple.

I have a sucky electric stove and purchased a heat deflector to go underneath but I found it is not necessary. I simply place a tiny amount of liquid (water, veggie stock or dashi) into my donabe, then add my vegetables or rice, turn the heat on medium and cover with lid. The donabe heats up much quicker than I thought, even on medium to...

Made in China
Buying this from JapanBargain through JapanSuperMall and fulfilled by Amazon, it gave me the impression this Donabe Clay pot was made in Japan. It is not. It is made in China and, unfortunately, the instructions provided are, presumably, written in Chinese. An English translation was NOT included, which would have been nice and appropriate since it is being sold in the United States. The item seems to be well made for the price and was packed well.

too small
Too small for any good use...it is only 6" in diameter 3" deep. maybe it is good to make one servicing with it.
